Setting the Stage

Happy New Year!  As we move into 2009 and Congress and our President-elect get ready to get to work education remains a front-burner issue.  Mark G. Yudof, President of the University of California system encourages those in his state and around the country to think about the economic benefits of investing in education as the engine of innovation and economic recovery.

A focus on education has certainly paid off for Michael Bennet.  The Denver Public Schools Superintendent has been appointed to fill the seat of Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO) who will soon become the new Secretary of the Interior. The choice of Bennet shocked many in Colorado’s Democratic circles and there’s speculation that his choice speaks to President-elect Obama’s interest in a national initiative on education.

That new initiative will come under the leadership of Arne Duncan, nominee for Secretary of Education and former head of the Chicago schools who may bring the reforms he supervised in Chicago to national stage.

It’s going to be an exciting year!
